[Appeared on RGJ page 11 with caption:] GETTING READY for Shrine circus, Reno youngsters and members of Polack Bros. troupes shared chores Tuesday afternoon on University of Nevada campus. Gazette photographer Bill Thorpe caught these pictures of the activity. Upper left, Kurt Anderson (left) and Leslie Hardy carry water to an elephant; upper right. Patricia Konyot soothes chimp Josie readying for animal act: center left, Cleo, one of Prince El Kigordo's 10 female lions peers through cage bars; center right, Frank Burger cares for some of the 25 dogs in his act, and below. Thomas Byers, left, and M. R. Chambers put up the rigging. Circus opened this afternoon with several thousand youngsters jammed into Mackay Stadium for what all agreed was the best- ever.

The Nevada State Journal (founded on November 23, 1870) and the Reno Evening Gazette (founded on March 28, 1876) were combined on October 7, 1983 to create the Reno-Gazette Journal (RGJ). The collection contains negatives of photographs taken by Reno Gazette-Journal reporters from 1959-2003 for use in news stories.
