Item Description
William Parker Lyon poses in a fireman's uniform in front of his firefighting apparatus with railcars fictitiously lettered as Eureka Nevada Narrow Gauge Railroad cars. The two passenger cars are ex-C&C/SPng Smoker, Baggage & Express No. 3 and ex-SPC Coach No. 69/N&C Second No. 9/later SP ng Combination Third No. 8. The photo was taken sometime between August 1939 and December 1949 when they were both owned by Mr. Lyon and were part of his Lyon Pony Express Museum across from the Santa Anita Race Track in Arcadia, CA. The LE 1 on his costume probably stands for "Lyon Engine 1"; his belt says "Chief Engineer"; and he's holding a bugle. While under his ownership, he variously fictitiously lettered the cars for the Eureka Nevada Narrow Gauge Railroad, the W. Parker Lyon Narrow Gauge Railroad, and finally for the California & Nevada Railroad. The railcars went to William F. Harrah in 1955 and are now both at Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City.
