[Appeared on RGJ page 6 with caption:] ONE OF THE LARGEST earth moving machines yet seen in this area went to work at the regatta site at Pyramid Lake this week through the courtesy of Curtiss-Wright Corporation of South Bend, Indiana and the local distributor, General Equipment Company. To give an idea of its size, Mike Scherrup (left), owner of General Equipment, Bill Daniels of Washoe County, Bob Helms of Helms Construction, Ralph Thompson of South Bend, and George Hutchins, general manager of parts and service from the South Bend C-W factory. Piloting the big scraper is Paul Hayden, chief demonstrator, also from South Bend. The equipment arrived Tuesday and was driven to the Pyramid Lake Regatta site Wednesday where it will move some ten thousand tons of dirt in clearing the parking area and air strip. Actual operations at the site are shown in the two pictures below.

The Nevada State Journal (founded on November 23, 1870) and the Reno Evening Gazette (founded on March 28, 1876) were combined on October 7, 1983 to create the Reno-Gazette Journal (RGJ). The collection contains negatives of photographs taken by Reno Gazette-Journal reporters from 1959-2003 for use in news stories.
