Cadet Corps, Entrance Gates Postcard, ca. 1910

This postcard painting shows five women and seven cadets at the entry gate to campus with Morrill Hall and Hatch Hall in the background. The caption on the image reads, "Gateway, University of Nevada, Reno, ca. 1910." The Morrill Act of 1890 stipulated that theoretical and practical military instruction be a part of the regular coursework of every male student. The government invested great amounts of money in higher education institutions. In return, this agreement allowed for a citizens army to be ready in time of need.
