[Appeared on RGJ page 11 with caption:] Figures released this week by the Washoe County School District show an 11.2 per cent increase this year in school population. After two weeks of school, there are 16,519 children enrolled compared to 14,852 last year at this time. School officials said they expected 300 more children to enroll in the next two weeks of school. The greatest number of children are in the twenty-one Reno schools which have an enrollment of 10,452. Last year school population in Reno totaled 9,649. Sparks schools had 4,212 children enrolled after two weeks of school compared with 3,583 last year. The remainder of the pupils. 1,855, are in the outlying, county schools. Largest increase in any one school was the 259-student jump in Reno High School. Enrollment figures for Reno schools are: Anderson, 410; Echo Loder, 509; Elmcrest, 292; Glenn Duncan, 538; Hunter Lake, 517; Jessie Beck, 305; Libby Booth, 507; Mary Doten, 368; McKinley Park, 146: Mt. Rose, 459; Orvis Ring, 426; Peavine, 426; Roger Corbett, 192; Sierra Vista, 304; Veterans Memorial, 572; B. D. Billinghurst, 554; Central, 826; Northside, 535; E. Otis Vaughn, 795; and Reno High School, 1,771. In outlying schools; Bonham, 7; Brown, 218; Gerlach Elementary, 190; Gerlach High School, 40; Home Gardens, 52; Huffaker, 149; Natchez, 39; Spanish Springs, 221; Stead, 645; Verdi, 92; and Wadsworth, 75. Thirty-five pupils attend California schools, 73 are handicapped, and 19 are homebound.

The Nevada State Journal (founded on November 23, 1870) and the Reno Evening Gazette (founded on March 28, 1876) were combined on October 7, 1983 to create the Reno-Gazette Journal (RGJ). The collection contains negatives of photographs taken by Reno Gazette-Journal reporters from 1959-2003 for use in news stories.
