Scenic byways are eligible for additional grants from the Federal Highway Administration, with money being used for signage, kiosks, distribution of information and other purposes. Originally designed as a driveway for large casino parking lots, the Strip has become the national archetype of the automobile-oriented street. It was officially designated a Scenic Route on March 21, 1996. Although scenic byways are eligible for additional federal and state funding, nearly one hundred hotel and casino owners contributed $1.9 million for the beautification of a four-mile stretch of the Strip during 1994-95. The Atlas of the New West digital collection consists of photographic materials relating to Goin's contribution of 20 photographs and their accompanying captions to the 1997 book project Atlas of the New West, edited by William Riebsame, and collaborated upon with Patricia Nelson Limerick and Charles Wilkinson, among others. The project highlighted development and change in the West, as well as outdoor recreation and cultural opportunities in the region. These materials are from Series 2, Subseries 1, Sub-subseries 1 of the Peter Goin Papers (2015-33).
