Title supplied by staff. [Photographer's caption:] [series CK51 - CK54] Wallace is a severely polluted mining community, principally due to the abandoned Hecla mill nestled higher up in Canyon Creek. Every day, this stream that runs under the mill picks up and carries hundreds of pounds of heavy metals down through Wallace and eventually into the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River. Fifteen years ago when mining collapsed, Wallace became a ghost town and you could buy a small house for under $10,000. Today, tourism has partially revived the town. The Atlas of the New West digital collection consists of photographic materials relating to Goin's contribution of 20 photographs and their accompanying captions to the 1997 book project Atlas of the New West, edited by William Riebsame, and collaborated upon with Patricia Nelson Limerick and Charles Wilkinson, among others. The project highlighted development and change in the West, as well as outdoor recreation and cultural opportunities in the region. These materials are from Series 2, Subseries 1, Sub-subseries 1 of the Peter Goin Papers (2015-33).
