[Photographer's caption:] Ancient Sand Dunes. September/October, 1996. The sign states: "This vast area was once covered by extensive sand dunes. Some 200 million years ago, winds from the northwest carried tons of fine-grained sand into this area, creating an immense desert. Over time, the sand drifts were covered by other layers of sediment, compressed, and cemented by quartz and calcite into Navajo sandstone. Erosion has since washed away the overlaying layers, exposing the "petrified" dunes. These ancient dunes are often erroneously referred to as "petrified," implying that they were once organic, like wood. Here this term simply means sand cemented into rock."

The Atlas of the New West digital collection consists of photographic materials relating to Goin's contribution of 20 photographs and their accompanying captions to the 1997 book project Atlas of the New West, edited by William Riebsame, and collaborated upon with Patricia Nelson Limerick and Charles Wilkinson, among others. The project highlighted development and change in the West, as well as outdoor recreation and cultural opportunities in the region. These materials are from Series 2, Subseries 1, Sub-subseries 1 of the Peter Goin Papers (2015-33).
