[Appeared on RGJ page 2 with caption:] THIS EARLY DOCUMENT shows that interest in oil in Churchill County dates back to 1865, a few weeks after Nevada had become a state. La Platte was then the county seat and a group of local men surveyed the pool and springs which they called Oil Lake. Lack of money to defray expenses probably nipped this early effort in the bud, and the lake has become obliterated with the passage of time.

The Nevada State Journal (founded on November 23, 1870) and the Reno Evening Gazette (founded on March 28, 1876) were combined on October 7, 1983 to create the Reno-Gazette Journal (RGJ). The collection contains negatives of photographs taken by Reno Gazette-Journal reporters from 1959-2003 for use in news stories.
