[Appeared on RGJ page 8 with caption:] FIRST DECISION is the relative size of the block of special material to the size and shape of the container and the type of material to be used. Florists who use the material suggest that the block be cut not less than two or three inches deep as that much minimum depth is needed to retain sufficient water to keep the flowers fresh. Above, the arranger works with block and stems to achieve the rough proportions of the arrangement before cutting the block and stems. The block is a soft green color and short stems of foliage material will conceal the 'mechanics' of the arrangement, even on a flat silver tray. The material, sold under various trade names, is available at most florists' shops and is inexpensive.
