[Appeared on RGJ page 8 with caption:] THEY START YOUNG, winning blue ribbons in Reno flower shows. Valerie Cain, age 4, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russel Cain, won a blue ribbon for her entry in the 'Sticks and Stones' junior class for children age eight or younger, and a third prize in 'Mustang,' an arrangement in a figurine. While mother was taking care of the baby, Valerie visited a neighbor and requested some broken pieces of coal which she arranged in a cast iron skillet with a brilliant cerise peony to make a striking arrangement that would be hard to 'top' in any age group. Mrs. Cain is past president of 'Dobie Diggers Garden Club, and Valerie's grandmother, Mrs. James Bernard of Carson City, is also an enthusiastic gardener and flower arranger.

The Nevada State Journal (founded on November 23, 1870) and the Reno Evening Gazette (founded on March 28, 1876) were combined on October 7, 1983 to create the Reno-Gazette Journal (RGJ). The collection contains negatives of photographs taken by Reno Gazette-Journal reporters from 1959-2003 for use in news stories.
