Item Description
The Portal de San Nicolas is a Baroque-style stone arch built in Pamplona, Navarre, Spain in 1666. It is one of six gates built during the city's time as a star fortress and staging area for conflicts with France. Before its original location was demolished, the gate was on the wall where the Avenida de San Ignacio is presently. It bears the name of Charles II (aka Carlos II, Charles the Mad, and Carlos El Hechizado ), the last Habsburg king of Spain, and appears to be dedicated to him. The inscription under the main coat of arms reads "Reinando Carlos II, gobernando la Reina su madre, siendo birrei y Capitan General de este Reino y de Guipuzcoa Don Francisco Tutabila, Duque de San Jerman, Ano 1666" (roughly- The reigning Carlos II, his mother [Queen Maria Anna of Austria] acting as regent, Viceroy and Commander-in-Chief of this kingdom and Guipuzcoa [Gipuzkoa]. - Don Francisco de Tutavilla y del Tufo [Viceroy of Navarre], Duke of San German, 1666
