Item Description
[Appeared on RGJ page 14 with caption:] THE OLD DAYS when harvest crews wandered from farm to farm cutting and stacking the rich crops, for many years a seasonal harbinger in the Truckee Meadows and western Nevada, were relived here under the auspices of the Nevada Historical Heritage Association. The site was the acreage owned by Dr, L. A. Rushmer on Wedekind Road. The star was a 1920 Case steam tractor and a threshing machine which again played the leading role from this scene straight out of early Americana. The entire rig is shown in action at the left. The 1920 Case is a 40 horsepower job hooked to the thresher by a belt. The center photo shows Tom Austin, Wedekind Road resident demonstrating his skill as a sack sewer, the aristocrat of the harvest crew. In the picture at left, Dr. Rusmer and John A. Tinkham are shown, left to right at the controls of the steam giant. In keeping with harvest tradition, the entire affair was made a community event, with many volunteers turning out to thresh the grain. The sponsoring society plans other threshing bees as well as many other projects of historical interest. (Gazette Photo)
