Text added to historical sign for Toquima Cave. October, 2005. These petroglyphs make [sic] have been made early as 1958 when local high school kid painted these designs no [sic] the walls of the cave as prank. The Forest Service soon desided [sic] that they could make hay out of these drawings and used them to withdraw more land from use of the general public. [Publication caption:] Frontispiece: Toquima Cave The state historical marker reads: East of the summit, north of the highway, and under a basalt flow lies Toquima Cave. Red, white, and yellow aboriginal drawings pictographs decorate its walls. Usually located near springs, as here, and on migratory big game trails, painted or pecked petroglyphs are associated with the food gathering localities of Nevadas prehistoric inhabitants. There are no known specific meanings attached to the particular design elements. Presumably, these people created the designs as ritual devices to insure success in the hunt. Most petroglyphs, therefore, probably are not messages, or conscious art forms. Scrawled at the bottom of the marker is this ungrammatical addition: These petroglyphs make have been made early as 1 958 when local high school kid painted these designs no the walls of the cave as prank. The Forest Service soon desided that they could make hay out of these drawings and used them to withdraw more land from use of the general public. The anonymous individual who wrote on the marker also encircled and crossed out USFS (U.S. Forest Service), BLM (Bureau of Land Management), and EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).
