Item Description
A dancer participating in the Zuberoa Maskarada (Zuberoako Maskaradak). The dance takes place as part of carnival (ihauteriak) festivities. While there are two groups of dancers that participate (the gorriak ["reds"] and beltzak ["blacks"]), performances usually revolve around five main characters- Txerrero, who sweeps a clear path for the others using a horse tail; Gatuzain (Katusaina), the cat-man with claws; Kantiniersa, the canteen carrier; Zamalzain (Zamalzaina), a stallion represented by a hobby horse; Ensenari (Entsenaria), the standard-bearer. At the end of the "godalet" (wine glass dance), a good harvest is ensured if the dancers can leap on to and off of the glass without spillingthe wine or breaking the glass itself.
