Quad, Mechanical Arts Building, and Morrill Hall, 1911

This view taken from the southeastern end of the Quad shows the Mechanical Arts Building (left) and Morrill Hall (right). The caption on the image reads, "South from the Shop" (photographic print, 3.25 x 5.5 inches). Constructed in 1897, the Mechanical Building was originally located where the Paul Laxalt Mining Engineering Building stands today. Originally, university students built their own wooden Mechanical Arts Building in 1892 which burned down in 1895. The brick and stone building was later named the Mechanical Engineering Building, the Human Development Laboratory (1965), University Relations (1978), and finally re-circled to the Mechanical Arts Building in 1979 when it was torn down. Morrill Hall, originally known as the Main Building, was the first building constructed at the university in 1885 and still stands today at the southern part of the Old Quad.
