This portrait shows Sarah Winnemucca (1844-1891), inducted into the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame in 1993. Winnemucca, a Paiute, wrote the autobiographic book "Life Among the Paiutes: Their Wrongs and Claims" in 1883 and is considered the first Native American woman author published in the United States. She was best known for her writing, interest in education and founding a school for native children in Nevada, and her activism in Native issues.
