Cadet Corps, Quad and John Mackay Statue, 1920

The Cadet Corps stands in formation at the edge of the Quadrangle with the Mackay Statue in the background. Military instruction followed the directives of the War Department. The National Defense Act (NDA) in 1916 changed UNR’s compulsory four year program to a compulsory two year program with two years of electives. The NDA paved the way for the beginning of the ROTC and expanded the Military Department at the University. Appointments in the Battalion were determined by military ability, which included considerations from several criteria: (a) Character. (b) Attendance. (c) Military conduct. (d) Zeal. (e) Soldierly bearing. (f) Aptitude for command. (g) Knowledge of drill and other duties as determined by examination and practical application. (h) Recommendation of superior officers. (i) Length of service in the Battalion.
