Sherman Howard, University of Nevada, circa 1947

Photograph of Nevada football player Sherman Howard. Howard was a running back for the Wolf Pack from 1947 to 1948 and was a sprinter on the Nevada track and field team in 1948. In 1948, Howard and teammate Al Tabor became the first two African Americans to play in a college football game in the state of Oklahoma. Despite the University of Tulsa's protests, both Howard and Tabor contributed in the Wolf Pack's 65 to 14 victory over the Golden Hurricanes. Howard and Tabor combined to account for three touchdowns in the rout. Howard played five seasons of professional football with the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Browns from 1949 to 1953. Howard was inducted into the Nevada Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995.
