Graduating students and faculty walk in procession at the 1909 Commencement from the University of Nevada and State Normal School. Stewart Hall and the original Chemistry Building can be seen in the background. The historic Chemistry Building, built in 1902, was located where Ross Hall currently stands today. The building was originally built using stone from a prison near Reno. In 1936, when the Chemistry Department moved to the newly constructed Mackay Science Building, the Agriculture Extension Service occupied the building and renamed it the Extension Building. It was demolished in 1957. Stewart Hall, originally named the Dormitory Building, was the first female dormitory built on campus and was completed in 1890. The top level of the building was torn down in the spring of 1959 due to damage from an earthquake.
