Item Description
Dancers participating in the Zagi Dantza (known as Jorrai Dantza in Gipuzkoa). One dancer carries a wineskin (the zagia) on his back--at this festival, the wineskin has been fashioned to resemble an animal--which is beaten with sticks or tools by the other dancers in the group. Depending on interpretation, the zagia represents temptation/distraction from work or plague in the form of insects. The dance ends after the dancer carrying the zagia is thrown out of town by the other dancers. It was believed that participating in this dance would protect the coming harvest.
