Students pose in front of the Mackay School of Mines and the Mackay Statue before the annual Cane Rush event. The caption on the image reads, "Before Taking." Cane Rush was an event where sophomores and freshmen were pitted in a game of strength and agility wherein a cane had to pass through the opponent team and reach the end of the Quad. Cane Rush was part of early university hazing often harshly done from upperclassmen to lowerclassmen.
