Item Description
[Appeared on RGJ page 11 with caption:] DEDICATION OF STEAD Air Force Base was a highlight of the Armed Forces Day observance at the big installation north of Reno. At left is a portrait of Lt. Croston K. Stead, for whom the base is named. A member of a well-known Nevada family, Lieutenant Stead was killed in 1949 while he was flying a national guard mission at the base. The portrait, presented to Col. A. G. Evanoff by Frank Bener on behalf of the Reno Chamber of Commerce, was painted by Mrs. Carolyn Edmunson of Reno. At right is a plaque noting that the base was named in memory of the Nevada flier.
