[Appeared on RGJ page 21 with caption:] WINS COMMISSION---Walter A. Mickelson of Fallon is shown above left receiving commission as ensign in U.S. Naval Reserve from Lt. Cdr. Joseph Gordon, USN, commanding officer of the Naval Reserve Training Center in Reno. Ensign Mickelson enlisted in Naval Reserve in October, 1955, was assigned to surface division 12-49, and applied for officer candidate course. While attending University of Nevada he received weekly training at the center and attended officer training courses at the U.S. Navy Training Base, Newport, R.I. two summers. He will be ordered to active duty this month at Naval Ordnance Test Station, China Lake, Calif. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion W. Mickelson, longtime Fallon residents.

The Nevada State Journal (founded on November 23, 1870) and the Reno Evening Gazette (founded on March 28, 1876) were combined on October 7, 1983 to create the Reno-Gazette Journal (RGJ). The collection contains negatives of photographs taken by Reno Gazette-Journal reporters from 1959-2003 for use in news stories.
