Gymnasium (historic) and Mackay School of Mines, 1911

This view of the northwest end of the Quad shows the historic Gymnasium (background center) with the southwest corner of the Mackay School of Mines showing in front of it. The caption on the image reads, "From the darkroom" (photographic print, 3.25 x 5.5 inches). The historic Gymnasium was built in 1896 with the majority of the labor coming from the university students themselves and was located where the western side of the Ansari Business Building stands today. This building was used to house all kinds of social events, including early commencements, until it was torn down in 1964. The Mackay School of Mines Building was originally built in 1908, funded by Clarence Mackay, for mining students. A second floor was added in 1926 by renowned Reno architect Frederic DeLongchamps. After being closed for many years and almost demolished, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and renovated again in 1988. Today the building houses the DeLaMare Library and the W.M. Keck Museum.
