Item Description
This wall on the west side of the building occupied by Nevada Fine Arts contains six 16 x 20 ft. panels, each painted by a different artist. From left to right: Artist Joe C. Rock pays homage to the renowned artist, Georgia O'Keefe, through a surrealist-style head (that of O'Keefe, according to Rock) that explodes with ideas. The mountain on her right shoulder, as well as the hanging flower, refer to subjects in O'Keefe's own artworks. Rock adds a twist to the O'Keefe style by incorporating words in different font styles and vibrant colors such as pink, purple, green, and yellow.; Artist Nanook portrays hands emerging from a turquoise background balancing stones. A blue and green ikat patterned snake-like object winds through the mural, separating the turquoise background from the abstract blue sky above; Erik Burke describes his mural, Rebuilding the Block, as "a texture dense field of western motifs and a deconstructed cinder block. Atop the pattern sits yellow lines demarcating the layout of the streets, a mile in every direction. A pair of eyes represent the creative visionaries atop a city determined to reinvent itself without any luck or success. The nearby peak of Mt. Rose is anchored at the base of the wall, covering the mouth and serving as a reference point for Reno's most regarded resource...Lake Tahoe" (eriktburke.com). A gray cinder block floats in front of a person's forehead, framed by hair. Piercing blue eyes stare at the viewer as the facial features begin to fade at the bridge of the nose. Blue, green, and red triangles in ones, twos, and threes speckle the mural and comprise Lake Tahoe at the bottom of the mural, with Mt. Rose rising above. Faint yellow lines representing roads/streets cover the mural; A vibrant yellow, orange, and red coyote sitting in front of a bronze moon rising amid a monochromatic sky and a mountain range comprised of various shapes, patterns and objects is the focal point of this mural painted by Kelly Peyton. Hearts, lighting bolts, fish skeletons and some words disguise themselves in the coyote's fur; A monochromatic mural painted by artist Fitz portrays a long-haired girl opening a window or roller door to reveal the only polychromatic portion of the mural, an outdoor scene of a lake, mountains and flowers. This scene is flanked on the right by industrial imagery, such as gears and conveyor belts; Artist Bryce Chisholm painted a "Super Boy" on his panel using a stencil (a technique Chisholm is known for). Outfitted in a red and black cape and mask with a star emblazoned on his chest, the boy strikes a heroic pose against a colorful background of various geometric shapes and patterns. Flying pigeons speckle the mural, while one is perched in the upper-left corner.
