University War Council, ca. 1943

This photo shows members of the University War Council in 1943 which included the following people: Lucille Benson, Alfred Higginbotham, Jay Carpenter, John Gobson, Leon Hartman, Stanley Palmer, George Sears, Mildred Swift, Reuben Thompson, Frederick Wood. The University of Nevada War Council was part of the Civilian Defense Act of 1943, passed by the Legislature to create a new Council of Defense which had a variety of organizational members including the university, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, American Legion, Red Cross as well as many others. The councils were instituted to keep track of their organizational resources, respond to air raids, and organize war effort voluntary civilian participation activities.
